Many times in my life there have been opportunities to exhibit one or multiple core competencies, and one that really stands out to me is the experience I had playing varsity soccer for my high school. This team sport setting is the ideal breeding ground for competencies to be used in practice. Solving problems, working well with others, communication, and leadership are all qualities that contribute to a successful team. Personally I was able to have a multiplied effect of these growing characteristics being the team captain of the team. Although all of them very critical to the play of the game, and communication maybe being the most important of all, I was really able to feel myself grow and mature as a leader on and off the field through this program. Being responsible for other people, having them rely on you, and being held accountable with things get tough are all parts of what becoming a leader is all about and I was able to get experience of this first hand.
